Students from Delany College, Granville took their learning outside the classroom and into the real world with an excursion to Sydney Olympic Park focused on water and sustainability.

Led by onsite education officers, Year 8 Geography students researched and collected data on the different strategies used to sustain water resources and reduce water scarcity. This included discovering how the stormwater flows around the North Western Catchment area of Sydney Olympic Park and how water is managed using drain and tree root grates, permeable pavers and recycled water.

Students also completed various field work activities including testing the salinity in the water, conducting pH tests to identify the levels of acidity or alkaline in the water as well as turbidity testing to reveal if sediment is present.

In their written report about the day, Year 8 students Joseph Diab, Lyriah Filo and Theodora Mo’ungatonga said the excursion was on a ‘different level’ to any other.

“We fulfilled the purpose of the excursion to collect data and complete the different types of testing and we had more fun than we expected,” they wrote. “We also went to see the recycling facility, known as WRAMS, that helps transform the water used around the site into recycled water. This saves 850 million litres of drinking water a year.”

Delany’s School Learning Leader of HSIE, Roubica Akkouche, said these opportunities compliment classroom learning.

“Field work studies are a great way to enrich students learning of the environment,” Mrs Akkouche said. “The students were able to build on their knowledge and understanding of the key environments they have been studying.”
