RU OK Day 2016
12 Sep 2016
Delany's Year 8 students have been raising awareness and fundraising for the R U Ok? day foundation. They've have been working in teams, and within each team have come up with some different activities to help raise awareness of mental health among the Delany College community.
R U Ok? day is not just a day where we take the time to ask someone ‘are you okay?’ ; it is really the beginning of an ongoing commitment to look out for each other.

“Not all of us can do great things but we can do small things with great love” ~ Mother Teresa Our eager students were on a mission to serve the marginalised community by volunteering their time to feed the homeless 🚐. This included preparing sandwiches 🥪, joining in conversation 🗣️ and even singing the night away 🎤... all in the name of service. Simran, Chanel, Justina, Mia and Christina expressed it was a very rewarding and eye opening experience ❤️

Our Y11 Biology class 🧫 went out on a field trip to Long Reef Rock Platform, Collaroy to complete a depth study on Ecosystem Dynamics 🐚🦭 Students were given the opportunity to study in detail the abiotic and biotic components of this marine ecosystem. There was a lot of data on the distribution and abundance of different organisms in the three littoral zones captured using quadrats and a transect. A little wet weather was experienced 🌧️ but it didn't dampen their spirits on the day!

Did you know the ancient art of fish printing, known as Gyotaku, was developed by the Japanese fishermen 🎣 prior to photography 📷 to prove the size of their catch? Today, Year 9 and 10 Visual Arts students printed Carp, Bream and Tailor 🐟🐠 as an introduction to their printmaking unit. These fish prints will be coloured with water colour in the same traditional method as the early Japanese pioneers 🎨🖌️

Many Catholic school students begin their HSC Trials this week. There are a number of pathways to success but the HSC remains an important milestone for Year 12 students. It can be a time of stress and pressure for students, so we chatted with former student Naomi Habib from the Class of 2021 to get some tips for students during this time.

At the end of last term, student leaders Rhys, Ashiatu and Sia-Comfort attended the Lifted Leaders Breakfast with Bishop Vincent held at CommBank Stadium together with student leaders from other schools across the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta. The forum focussed on two key topics; cyberbullying 💻📱 and consent 👍🛑 Media personality Erin Molan, shared her story of being a victim of cyberbullying on the social media platform Twitter. It raised questions about how we address this issue within a school context. We look forward to bringing the key ideas and important conversations to our school community to help raise awareness and offer support to our student body 🧑🎓👩🎓

Tuesday, 28 June saw Delany College return to service the Vinnies Van for the first time in over a year 🚐 The night, as always, was rewarding for our students, Joshua, Samuel, Rhys and Lyriah, as they embodied our school motto of Love, Serve and Hope. We're always proud when our students serve the needs of the community and give of their time to charity ❤️ We'll be braving the cold weather and heading out again tomorrow night! 🙏🏽😇

Delany Day, a celebration of Bishop Daniel Delany, was held on Wednesday, 22 June here at our College. We united with our brother and sister schools Patrician Brothers' College, Blacktown, Patrician Brothers' College, Fairfield, Holy Cross College, Ryde and Brigidine College St Ives, to honour our incredible Patrician heritage. Students took part in workshops, created a social media profile for Daniel Delany and finished the day with a liturgy ✝️ It's a day our students always look forward to and gain a true sense of connection to the wider Patrician community ☘️
